James and Joe duel it out!

James Beagley on full gas!

Event number 1 in the Beech House Dental Practice Time Trial League was the well-known V212 10-mile course on the A168 from Arkendale lane end down to Walshford roundabout and back. Following a winter of base training, riders would have an opportunity to see where they were at and to try to set a pb.

After 4 months of constant rain, the weather was very welcome; warm, around 16 degrees Celsius with a moderate wind coming from the north-east.

26 riders signed on from Harrogate Nova, Moonglu and Harrogate Tri Club. It was an even split of riders on TT bikes and road bikes.

The class of riders was very strong with some riders on road bikes putting times in of 22 and 23 minutes. However, it was the next generation of young riders on TT bikes who took 1st and 2nd on the podium. James Beagley (Nova) produced a phenomenal time of 20:45, a Junior record to take 1st place with Joe Turnbull (Nova) in 2nd in a similarly exceptional time of 21:02. At 16 years old and 18 years old respectively, these 2 young men will no doubt improve significantly and break many records, in the future. Duncan Mullier (Nova) was 3rd on a TT bike in an excellent time of 22.04.

Fastest road bike rider was Jonny Britton (Moonglu) in 22:24, breaking the road bike record, with Tom Rowlay (Nova) 2nd in 23:13, just edging out Tom Ward (Moonglu) in 3rd in 23:16. Joanne Wallace (Moonglu) was 1st lady in 28:51 on a road bike.

Thanks, as always to Margaret and Vaughan Caswell for setting up. Also, a big thank you to the marshals, the number-catchers, and the timekeepers.

Next week’s event is scheduled to be the Farnham 9-miler but due to roadworks may be on the V212 again, give riders a chance to see if they can improve their times.
