Final Event Produces Fast Times!

Event number 17 in the Beech House Dental Practice Time Trial League was a 4 mile climb from Lofthouse Fire Station up to Scarhouse Dam car park. This was the final event giving riders one more chance to improve their placing in the league.

The road surface is very smooth – ideal for cyclists wanting to go as quick as possible! The course is quite flat and fast for the first 2.5 miles before ramping up towards the finish so not necessarily a route for the lightweight hill-climbers. The weather was cool at around 15 degrees Celsius with a strong breeze from the southwest. This meant a tailwind for the first part and then a headwind as the riders turned west towards the finish. There had been some rain earlier but mercifully this held off for the event.

14 riders signed on from Harrogate Nova and Moonglu + 1 guest rider, David Fellows from Solihull CC. Last week’s climb up Darley Head had been youth over experience but this time, would it be a different story? David Fellows had come prepared and tackled the hill climb on road bike with a disc rear wheel, producing a stunning time of 10:53 and breaking the course record + the road bike record. The next fastest rider and official league winner of the event was Tom Davy of Nova in 12:19 also smashing the schoolboy and schoolboy road bike record. In 2nd place was Simon Ketteringham of Nova in 12:29 breaking the veteran road bike record and beating son Mark (12:43) into 3rd place by 14 seconds. In 4th place was Pete Shepherd (Nova) in 13:06 with Mark Turnock (Nova) 5th in 13:10. Darren Glegg (Moonglu) was 6th in 13:21 with Mark Smith (Nova) 7th in 13:25 and Richard Davey (Nova) 8th in 13:43.

Not far behind were the remaining riders – less than 3 minutes separated 1st and last so everyone was happy with their times. After the event, everyone headed to How Stean Gorge Café for refreshments.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Margaret and Vaughan Carswell for running the league, for timekeeping at most of the events and of course Duncan Mullier for managing the website.
